Tribal governments are public health jurisdictions with inherent legal authorities and powers to prevent and control diseases. These authorities include the following powers:
Tribes successfully implemented several communicable disease control strategies during the COVID-19 Pandemic including elder meal delivery, virtual cultural events, mass immunization, built environment modification, and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to staff and community members.
The American Indian Health Commission, in collaboration with Tribes and state agencies, has developed model communicable disease codes, plans, resolutions, and trainings. These resources aim to strengthen Tribal sovereignty through the exercise of their governmental public health powers.
