Celebrating National Public Health Week: A Tribal Lens
April 8, 2026 | Information

Public health in Washington State is strongest when it reflects the voices, sovereignty, and lived experiences of the American Indian and Alaska Native communities who have stewarded this land since time immemorial. At the Commission, our work is rooted in a simple truth: our ways are resilient, and our communities thrive when public health systems honor that resilience.
A Tribal‑Driven Approach to Public Health

AIHC is a Tribal‑driven nonprofit representing 29 federally recognized Tribes and two Urban Indian Health Organizations across Washington State. Our role is to ensure that public health policies, programs, and partnerships uplift Native wellness, respect Tribal sovereignty, and address the unique health needs of our communities.
We collaborate closely with state agencies, legislators, and public health professionals to shape systems that work with Tribes—not around them. This includes advocating for culturally grounded care, supporting Tribal public health infrastructure, and ensuring that Native voices guide statewide health decisions.
Uplifting Community Wellness Through Programs and Resources

AIHC supports a wide range of programs that help Tribes build healthier futures. Our work includes:
- Strengthening Tribal public health capacity
- Supporting culturally responsive health programs
- Providing resources and other assistance
- Sharing best practices across communities
Every initiative is guided by the wisdom of Tribal leaders and the lived experiences of Tribal members in Washington State.
Resilience at the Heart of Our Work

The phrase “We Are Resilient. Our Ways Are Resilient.” is more than a motto—it’s the foundation of our public health approach. Tribal communities have always adapted, survived, and thrived through change. Today, that resilience continues to guide our work as we build systems that honor culture, protect sovereignty, and promote whole-person health for generations to come.
Looking Ahead

As we move forward, AIHC remains committed to strengthening public health across Washington State by elevating Tribes and ensuring their voices shape the policies that affect our communities. Together—with Washington State Tribes, UIHOs, and state partners—we continue to build a healthier, more equitable future.
