Public Safety and the Justice System Workgroup
Effective responses to the opioid and fentanyl public health crisis are complicated by the complexity of jurisdiction on Tribal lands, providing appropriate services in carceral settings, and linking people to care at release. Develop a plan to address priorities identified at the 2023 and 2024 Tribal Opioid/Fentanyl Summits. This committee will address the following priorities:
- Jurisdictional Issues:
- Addressing complexity of jurisdiction on Tribal lands
- Establishing Tribal warrant reciprocity
- Create clear, consistent process for jurisdictional transfer between counties and Tribes
- Increasing coordination with Tribal wellness courts
- Supporting Re-entry
- Providing appropriate services in carceral settings, including detox and re-entry at both state and local levels
- Linking people to care at release
- Expanding access to diversion programs and other supportive services – including re-entry programs
- Collaboration with Federal, State, Tribal and Local agencies
- Enhancing collaboration between Tribal police and other law enforcement agencies
- Strengthen collaboration between different sectors including law enforcement and providers
- Law Enforcement need to be trained on working with Recovery Navigators/REAL Team members
- Other Outstanding priorities:
- Supporting Tribal drug task forces
- Strengthening and integrating traditional judicial systems and cultural practices,
- Assess local laws to determine where they need to be strengthened or revised
- Juvenile Justice
- Creating and reviewing list of resources and resource documents for this priority to support development of Tribal Opioid and Fentanyl Response Resource Library
